House Rentals (English)

The houses are available for rent on a nightly or weekly basis (minimum stay 2 nights) .

We can also offer half board to people wanting to share wholesome, tasty meals prepared from local produce and cooked on our solar cookers. This allows those people who would like to have some interaction with the workers on the farm to join us at the dinner table and to gain a deeper insight into the workings of the project.

Our cosy, traditionally built stone cottages are set amongst the olive trees in the heart of the mountains. They make the perfect base to unwind, go walking, meditate, paint, play guitar, swim in the natural swimming pool, do yoga, watch the sunsets, go to town for tapas, read books, take a trip up the mountain, practice your spanish, stroke the cat… the list is endless!

Information about staying at the finca:

La Burra Verde is an association to promote sustainable living.   We are based on the farm and occasionally run courses in our large yurt.   The farm is a 5 min walk from the village down a footpath. There is no road access. We meet guests in the village to help them with their luggage and take them to the farm. This could be a small inconvenience for some people, but it means the farm is incredibly peaceful ,quiet and safe for children. lt is a beautiful walk along the footpath. However, if you have mobility problems unfortunately you may find the access difficult. Please ask us if in doubt. For parents with babies and toddlers access along the path is complicated with buggies, (too narrow) the best option is a sling for babies. Toddlers have to be carried along approximately 150m of path.

You’re welcome to explore the farm’s olive terraces, river and acequias, get to know the donkeys, chickens and cats, and in the summer months bathe in the outdoor pool. You’re also welcome to use the yurt (all year round) and the yoga studio (winter) to meditate, do yoga, read and work/study, provided it’s not being used for our courses.

We are keen to encourage our guests to lower their carbon footprint in any way possible and can show you how to use our solar cookers if you would like to learn and sometimes use them as an alternative to the gas cooker. We can give you advice about different aspects of self-sufficiency and sustainable living, as well as information about the local area.

Staying here is a real eco experience- we have large organic veg gardens , many fruit trees and free range chickens- we can provide you with eggs, fruit, veg, olive oil, almonds, olives…all from the farm .If you would like to buy a veg box please ask us about availability first. There are lots of beautiful walks, swims, sights, sounds and sun.   We have solar electricity so please leave your high energy consumption electrical appliances at home. (hair dryers wont work here!). This also obviously means that there is no electric heating or airconditioning!. We also have compost toilets, located a short distance from the house, and woodburning stoves for heating- we can show you how to light them if you dont have experience. We provide sufficient wood to keep you warm on winter evenings when the temperature drops. The house is very cosy and warms quickly, keeping the heat well, but if you require extra firewood, we can provide it at a cost of 10€ per wheelbarrow full.

Please note: these are rustic cottages. There is only 12v electricity which means that apart from lights, recharging mobile phones and laptops and other devices with a usb charger no other electrical appliances can be used. This also obviously means that there is no electric heating or airconditioning!. We clean the cottages thoroughly before each arrival but the materials of the building are all natural: wooden beams, bamboo, lime renders on the walls and a natural rock wall at the back of the house, we are also surrounded by a completely natural environment: trees, grass, birds, insects… so if you have an allergy to pollen, natural fibers, dust etc we might not be the best option for you. Also don’t be surprised to see a gecko hanging out behind one of the beams, or bats fllitting around outside.

We have solar panels for electrcity and hot water, so we ask guests to be conscious of not wasting energy and water, turning off lights when not in use etc. We do not allow dogs on the farm and we ask parents to explain to their children any potential dangers and to make sure they dont climb on the roofs, leave gates open etc. We have a natural swimming pool that is quite deep- no non-swimmers should use it and you swim at your own risk. The pool is not chlorinated and is full of wildlife-frogs, dragonflies etc.!

 The local area

The cottage is in an amazing off grid setting- no road access (5mins walk from the village). No barking dogs, no cars, no noisy neighbours!. But for a night out in the tapas bars or restaurants Orgiva is just 10mins by car or 30 mins walk, its a lively town with many bars, shops, a cine club, classes, local fiestas etc. There is no shop in Bayacas- the nearest village, so we advise people to shop in Orgiva where there are lots of small supermarkets, healthfood shops, and a market on thursday . If you prefer to eat out there are some good restaurants, a morrocan-style tea shop/restaurant,and many bars with free tapas and free wifi.

The farm is only 20 mins from the Sierra Nevada national park which has stunning snowy peaks, incredible walks and picturesque villages. It is also only 40 mins by car from the coast (Salobreña, Motril). Las Alpujarras is a unique region, famous for its millenary olive trees and ancient arabic irrigation channels which water our terraces in summer with snowmelt water from the Sierra Nevada, These biodiverse ecosystems have evolved over thousands of years and have created a rich landscape . If you are a birdwatcher or a wildflower enthusiast there are some beautiful orchids and many different species of birds on the farm.

Getting around

Local buses to Orgiva and Bayacas or hire a car. We can pick guests up in Orgiva if bus times dont work for you to get to Bayacas. There are local buses to take you up the mountain or to the coast.

We can help with luggage (we usually meet guests and carry their bags in a wheelbarrow!) but if you are not able bodied or have any kind of mobility problem, or have babies and/or small children and need to use a buggy, we do not recommend you book Casa Luna, or consider booking Casa Parra which is nearer to the entrance to the farm (see our desciption for Casa Parra for more info and comments by previous guests) .
